Boats in the Cape Cod Canal

Boats in the Cape Cod Canal

My family and I had an impromptu day-trip over to the Cape Cod Canal this weekend, where we saw so many beautiful boats going by, and I knew I had to do a sketchbook spread featuring them.

I imagined this spread going a little differently, but I am really happy with how it turned out! Yesterday, I did the first 2 boats on the left hand page. I had more time to sit and sketch, so those ones definitely reflect that extra time. I tried to simplify the boat shapes without oversimplifying, so they still have their own character, and I added color to help define the shapes even further.

I originally meant to sketch smaller and looser with more on the page, but since I’m not experienced with drawing boats, I think it was helpful for me to start slower and more detailed to get a better feel for the shapes. Next time I try them, I think I’ll try going quicker and looser – something I struggle with and am working on!
